Abstract

The structuralist Ferdinand de Saussure prescribed the paring of two contrasting term into a unit and termed it as binary opposition. These terms are distinctly chosen where one term is defined in a reciprocal determination of the other. Eventually the first term is acknowledged as fundamental while the second term is considered as derivative of the first term. Saussure’s idea of setting off the two contradictory term provides better understanding, as he believed that human mind is derives meaning by differentiating between things. This binary opposition, therefore becomes inevitable part of the narratives as they help readers to reinforce meaning. The two distinct term however perpetuated and legitimized societal power structures favouring specific majority over the other. This research paper aims to analyse the binary opposition used by Devdutt Pattanaik in his literary work Sita and identify the power structure of the society.
