Abstract

In this study, petroleum geochemical properties and shale oil potential of the Jurassic Sargelu Formation at Kouhrang locality of Chaharmahal and Bakhtiyari Province (SW Iran) were investigated for the first time. For this purpose, a suite of samples were gathered from two outcrop sections including Ab Kaseh (AbK) and Asal Keshan (AsK) in the studied locality, and then subjected to organic geochemical analysis. The high values of total organic carbon (TOC) contents (>4 wt%) in all studied samples represented excellent richness of organic matter. The cross-plots of S2 versus TOC and hydrogen index (HI) against oxygen index (OI) showed the predominance of type II kerogen (oil-prone) in both studied sections with a minor contribution of type I kerogen (highly oil-prone) in AsK section. Therefore, Sargelu oil shales have been deposited under reducing marine condition. The plots of TOC against Rock-Eval S2, HI, potential yield (S1+S2), and S2/S3 parameters suggested very good to excellent oil generation potential for the both sections. The maturity indicators represented immature to early mature levels of thermal maturity. Overall, it can be concluded that the Sargelu Formation in Kouhrang locality has a great oil shale potential, and can generate substantial amounts of oil during retorting process.
