Abstract

Blood is an indicator of the physiological condition of an animal. Therefore, a field study was conducted to investigate the hematological parameters of fish Tilapia mossambicus. The following parameters were evaluated in blood: hemoglobin content, red blood cell (RBC) and white blood cell (WBC) count, packed cell volume (PCV), and mean corpuscular volume (MCV), MCH, and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) values. These parameters have been used as pollution and physiological indicators of organic dysfunction in environmental and aquaculture studies. For this purpose, Puliyanthangal and Maniyambattu Lake, Ranipet district, received industrial wastewater from nearby tanner industries. The seasonal mean value of Hb, RBC, PCV, MCH, and MCHC increased in the monsoon season and decreased in the premonsoon season. The seasonal mean value of WBC, PCV, and MCV of Tilapia mossambicus in Puliyanthangal, and Maniyambattu lake was statistically significant during the season at p<0.05. The variation in values of different parameters can be attributed to exposure of fish to pollutants present mainly in the Puliyanthagal and Maniyambattu Lake, which receives tannery wastewater nearby local industries. These results provide a valuable tool in monitoring the condition and state of health of fish by knowing the normal value for their responses to stress which affects body metabolism.
